We will experience pain in our body from time to time and it's important to distinguish what kind of pain it is before it's time to see a specialist. Imagine you are experiencing neck pain, back pain or hip pain, could it be muscular, spinal or nerve pain? You will find muscular pain is relieved with massage, heat and stretching. If it is joint pain, it may be exacerbated with certain movements and not much change with stretching. However, heat and cold therapy can provide temporary relief. If it is nerve pain, it could be an impingement but it depends where. Gentle stretching and cold therapy can provide relief but it will only be temporary.
Which allied health professional do you see for body aches and pains? If the issue is related to the musculoskeletal system, a remedial massage can be enough to provide relief with personalised homecare to keep you going. Regular treatments will help get you back on track. If it is a joint or nerve pain, massage can also alleviate the tension that has built up from the pain. If the pain is directly a joint or nerve related issue that is not alleviated with massage, an osteopath, chiropractor or physiotherapist may be able to help. Don't see any health professional, make sure you get one that is recommended. The massage therapists at Body Reform work closely with other health professionals and we will be able to determine if you need to be referred on to another allied health professional.
Some at-home self care you can do in the meantime is stretching (static or PNF), hot/cold therapy, adequate rest, become more body aware and the postures you adopt, get into a healthy fitness routine, add more movement especially if you are sedentary. Don't leave your pain to build up too long! Without the proper attention from an experienced professional can make matters worse, and it could take longer and cost more to recover. Come and see as at the Body Reform team, we will be happy to discuss your concerns!
